Case of Nanama Keita Suffers Another Setback
Monday, 26 September 2011 20:46
(JollofNews) - Banjul Magistrates' Court resumed hearing Monday on the false information case involving former
Daily Observer's deputy editor-in-chief and Sports editor Nanama Keita, who previously failed to appear before the said jurisdiction. With a bench warrant hanging over his head, move taken by the accused person to jump bail left another journalist Saikou Ceesay, who served as surety for Keita flabbergasted.
News reports have it that Nanama Keita fled from The Gambia "after serious attempts by the Gambia security agents” to arrest or possibly harm him. He told the Accra-based Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) that he found himself “behind bars for more than 24 hours before being slapped with the bogus ‘false information' charge”.
When the case was called for hearing, ASP Manneh, who was holding brief for Police Prosecutor Sainey Joof, applied to adjourn the trial on the ground that “all efforts are underway in securing the attendance of the accused person. “In this respect the prosecution would like to seek for a fortnight adjournment,” he said.
Defense counsel Neneh Cham raised no objection over the prosecution’s application. Magistrate Tabally's decision to adjourn the case till October 10, 2011 is another indication that Police prosecutors just aren't satisfied with none-appearance of the accused person who reportedly joined 13 journalists around the world attending the "2011 UN Reham al-Farra (RAF) Memorial Journalists Fellowship Programme" which kick-started on September 12, 2011 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The next coming days will certainly shed light on how to go about a matter that already plunged the entire media fraternity into commotion.

By writing to Mr Jammeh, not as president of the country, but as owner of the Observer Company,Mr Keita has provided him with information he may never have had about his company.
I don't know if the claims or allegations have been investigated and found to be false, but even if that is the case, the state should never have been involved.
As owner of the Observer,Jammeh could have advised management to punish Mr Keita by either terminating his service or warning him and asking for an apology to Mr Mbaye.
Or Mr Mbaye could have been informed about the outcome of the investigation, advised to either accept internal arbitration, pursue the matter in court or seek other forms of redress and compensation.
The case got NOTHING TO DO WITH THE STATE.
