Can You Help Gambia appeal launched

Can_you_help_GambiaA BUSINESSMAN from Great Bowden is appealing for donations of basic medical supplies to help a health centre in The Gambia.
Mark Evans, marketing and communications director for Harborough-based IT firm Imerja, is travelling to the west African country next month to attend the opening of the new centre in a village called Penyem.Can_you_help_Gambia
Mr Evans and Imerja have been helping the Northampton Trustee Fund (NTF) support the village by providing mosquito nets and funding a full-time medical professional.
The 43-year-old is visiting the country with his wife Kareena Gardiner and sons Joshua (8) and Toddy (6) for the opening of the new health centre on February 19.
He is now seeking donations of basic first aid supplies, plastic measuring spoons, syringes and pill bottles – no needles or glass – so the family can take them to help stock the centre.
They are also looking for specialist medical items such as haemoglobin testers, malaria test kits, sterilisers and digital thermometers.
Mr Evans told the Mail: “These are things that may seem ordinary to us, but even if you have money to buy them in The Gambia they may just not be available. The centre has access to medicines which it buys in bulk using financial donations, but does not have access to suitable materials to properly store and dispense them.
“Thomas Cook Airlines has kindly offered an additional baggage allowance so we just need to gather the items and then build some muscles to carry them.”
Church Langton School, where Mr Evans’ sons go, has been helping with the collection.
The NTF charity was founded in 2004 by a family of teachers and supports projects led by the Penyem Village Development Committee – equivalent to a parish council.
Mr Evans got involved when his family sponsored a boy at the Penyem village school.
To drop off donations, visit Harborough library, in Adam and Eve Street, Boots chemist, in St Mary’s Place, Mistry’s Pharmacy, in High Street, or contact Mr Evans at Imerja on 0844 225 2888, by next Friday, February 4.
