Campaign on Safety of Journalists Gets Support of Malian Government
Sunday, 17 October 2010 22:32
FAJ Press ReleaseThe Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), the African Regional Organisation of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Government of the Republic of Mali held a meeting today, Friday October 15, 2010 in Bamako, Mali and agreed to work together on the safety and protection of African journalists.

The FAJ delegation had talks with the Malian Foreign Minister and International Cooperation H.E. Moctar Ouane on the safety of African journalists and how the Malian government could support the struggle to promote safety of African journalists, by taking on an Africa-wide policy on the safety and protection of journalists through the African Union (AU).
Omar Faruk Osman, President of FAJ, who was accompanied by Ndey Tapha Sosseh, FAJ Treasurer and Zied El-Heni, FAJ Steering Committee member explained to the Minister the unsafe and insecure conditions in which African journalists work. “African journalists lose continuously their lives for being the courier of information and news to the people of Africa. Time has come for African political leaders to show leadership and adopt an Africa-wide resolution to protect safety of journalists in this continent” said Osman.
The delegation presented to the Minister the outcome of the key regional gathering in Addis Ababa on the safety and security of journalists, organised by FAJ and African Union Commission (AUC) and a draft resolution on the safety and protection of journalists which is expected to be tabled at the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa in January 2011.
On his part, Moctar Ouane, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Mali told the FAJ delegation that the Malian Government is committed to promote freedom of expression in Africa and asserted that the safety of journalists is cornerstone to the enjoyment of this freedom. Mr Ouane confirmed to the delegation his government’s willingness to take forward the resolution on the safety of journalists during and before the African Union summit in January 2011 to bolster his government’s devotion for rights of journalists and cooperation with the Federation of African journalists and its sub-regional organisation, West African journalists Association (WAJA).
