Blackout Causes Flight Chaos in Dakar Airport
Friday, 23 September 2011 20:21
(JollofNews) - Air traffic in and out of Senegal’s Leopold Sedar Senghor Airport got interrupted for well over an hour
Wednesday night, due to power failure, eye witnesses and official sources told journalists in the capital Dakar. According to numerous accounts widely carried in many Senegalese newspapers, the problem had to do with a burning extension wire which could only have been
controlled by switching off the entire lighting system at the airport, hence the black out as technicians traced and fixed the offending wire. The incident was successfully resolved and traffic continued later the same night. However while it lasts, a Paris bound Air France plane was delayed on the tarmac for well over an hour while a Dakar bound Royal Air Maroc flight was diverted to Banjul International airport in nearby Gambia.
The incident, which some mistaken to be part of the current general power crisis in the country has heightened criticism of the government over its seemingly inability to guarantee electricity supply even in sensitive areas.
