Bissau Seals Coup File
Sunday, 05 June 2011 00:12
(Jollofnews) - Guinea-Bissau authorities have dropped charges against political and military leaders accused of taking part in the June 2009 attempted
coup. The attempted coup resulted to the assassination of two former ministers of territorial administration and defence, Baciro Dabo and Helder Proenca, respectively. Accused of plotting a coup, the two had been shot dead by Guinea-Bissau soldiers.

Bissau authorities defended Dabo’s killing, saying he had resisted arrest. This contradicted other reports that he was asleep with his wife when he was shot. Attorney General Amine Michel Saad defended reasons for dropping charges, adding they had not recorded anything new since the start of investigation.
"The law allows us to close the case if there are no advances," Attorney General told AFP. The aftermath of the coup saw mass arrest of some military and political leaders most of who were close ally of former President Nino Vierra. Mr. Vierra was hacked to death with machetes on March 2 by soldiers who accused him for killing the army chief of staff, General Batista Tagme Na Wai Tagme.
Mr. Vieira’s brutal killing followed hours after that of the general. Mr. Tagme had earlier warned that his fate was linked to that of the president‘s.
Some dignitaries accused of being behind the coup attempt, inlcuding the former prime ministers, Faustino Imbali and Aristide Gomes, fled the country.
