ASP Lamin King Colley, Others Charged With Economic Crimes

(Thepoint) - Economic crimes and other related charges were yesterday brought against ASP Lamin King Colley and six
others at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Manyima Bojang. The accused persons are Ousman Manjang of Gam-Star Insurance Company, Zainey Faal, Abdou Willan of Gam-Star Insurance Company, Musa Jobe of Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), Tida Badjie of the Gambia Police Force , ASP Lamin King Colley of the Gambia Police Force and Temple Godson, Nigerian national, working under a printing business.
They could not take their plea, however, as the lower court lacks jurisdiction to try economic crimes.
Count one stated that Ousman Manjang, Zainey Faal, Abdou Willan, Musa Jobe, Tida Badjie, Superintendent Lamin King Colley and Temple Godson, a Nigerian national, between 2010 and 2011 in Banjul and diverse places in The Gambia conspired among themselves to defraud the Government of its’ revenue.
Count two stated that all the seven accused persons, between 2010 and 2011 in Banjul and diverse places in The Gambia, intentionally did an act which was detrimental to the economy of The Gambia.
Count three indicated that the seven accused persons, between 2010 and 2011 in Banjul and diverse places, with intent to defraud the government, forged road tax discs and vehicle license receipt books which was detrimental to the economy of The Gambia.
The charge on count four further stated that the seven accused persons, between 2010 and 2011 in Banjul and diverse places in The Gambia, with intent to defraud the state, had in their possession a printing machine for the purpose of forging road tax discs and vehicle license receipt books which was detrimental to the economy of The Gambia.
The particulars of offence on count five added that ASP Lamin King Colley, Musa Jobe and Tida Badjie, between 2010 and 2011 in Banjul and diverse places in The Gambia, being employed in the public services and by virtue of their status as officers of the Gambia Police Force and GRA officer respectively, abused their various offices by procuring and receiving false road tax discs and vehicle license receipt books which was detriment to the economy of The Gambia.

These counts needed redress when proven in court of law; economic crimes are against a whole state & people; the investigations & court proceeding could also look into, IF, there ‘bigger-fish’-accomplishers, who needed better-frying, to nip this attitude in the bud for good. States can’t function without revenue with fraud of some magnitude; but what do you/one hope to find in a state “when ‘head of fish’ get rot”? Would this match the millions spent on the Syndola- futampaff-Jamurai’s & others?? Your guess, as good as mine???
