‘As Musicians We Should Serve As Role Models’ - Jaliba Kuyateh
Tuesday, 11 January 2011 16:22
JollofNews - Gambia’s music icon Jaliba Kuyateh has called on his fellow Senegambian musicians to serve as role
models and use their leadership characteristics for the best interest of the peoples. The King of Kora’s pronouncement came in the wake of the just concluded World Festival of Black Arts and Cultures, which was held in Senegal.

“As musicians we should serve as role models,” he said, noting that musicians have a crucial role to play in society in helping to open people’s mind to the sense of duty and responsibility.
According to Jaliba, musicians must not dodge their responsibilities to participate actively in building peace among nations. He recalled the move he took in 2003 to call on Mbalax music star Youssou Ndour so as to help diffuse tensions that erupted that year following a football match between Gambia and Senegal.
“I then asked him to compose together a song that will help to maintain peace in people’s hearts and minds,” he said.
In the light of this, the Gambian music icon deplored the fact that despite his call there was no positive feedback from his Senegalese counterpart. Needless to say that his call remained ‘unheard’ while a sort of recurrence in the relation between the two countries continues to prevail…
Resolutely decided to contribute his quota in peace building, Jaliba Kuyateh made a strong promise to compose a song centered on the idea of “Senegambia” in order to bring everlasting peace between the same people, separated by centuries of Colonialism.
“I will write a song for peace and will invite musicians from both countries to contribute their quota,” he told JollofNews.
Gambia’s most amazing talents took the stage on December 29, at the French Institute of Senegal, located in the heart of the Senegalese capital city, Dakar, an opportunity for the leader of the Kumareh Band to maintain the big crowd in a long and exciting moment. The show ended with arguably the most triumphant musical performance ever showcased between the two countries, through a marvelous duet between Jaliba Kuyateh and Abou Thiouballo - as if they wanted to indicate that the idea of Senegambia is a reality in the musical scene…
