Another Gambian youth faces lengthy jail term abroad
Tuesday, 16 November 2010 23:01
George N. Bensouda, a Gambian with permanent residency in the United States, faces over 40 years in jail over attempted homicide charges.
Bensouda, 27, last Monday appeared in the County Court of the small US city of Eau Claire in the west-central part of the state of Wisconsin, where he was accused of firing multiple 9 mm shots at someone.

He was charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree reckless endangerment, both by use of a dangerous weapon, for reportedly firing shots at a man early Sunday at the eight-unit apartment complex where he lives.
According to a report by the US based Twincities.com, this is second time in less than a year the Gambian is facing similar charges. He was reportedly charged in January with two felonies and a misdemeanor for reportedly firing shots at a car in the early morning hours of Dec. 27.
“Charges related to that case were later dropped, reportedly because Bensouda threatened witnesses in the case,” said assistant district attorney Gary Schuster.
Accordingly, the circumstances in Bensouda’s first case are similar to the Sunday incident, in which he reportedly shot at a man after the two had an altercation. Both instances are said to have also involved alcohol consumption.
"This is a super serious case," said Mr Schuster. "Only by the grace of God someone was not killed."
The charges the Gambian faces are said to be a combined maximum penalty of 47 1/2 years in prison, excluding the weapon enhancement penalty. A case review hearing is scheduled for Friday, with his preliminary hearing set for Nov. 23, according to Twincities.com.
Below is the account of Bensouda’s case as reported by Twincities.com.
A woman, 25, said she and her husband, 25, were at Bensouda's apartment, where they were all drinking. The men, wearing boxing gloves, were playing a boxing video game. The men started "fooling around" and scuffled, and the man accidentally hit Bensouda's TV, causing it to break.
The woman said she saw Bensouda grab a handgun and she hit him over the head with a liquor bottle to escape the upstairs apartment. She called police from a neighboring apartment.
The husband said he thought Bensouda was shooting blanks even though he believed bullets were whizzing past him. He said Bensouda was right behind him on the outside stairs and was befuddled he was not hit from such close range.
Bensouda was arrested about 400 feet away from the apartment complex. Police found a 9 mm handgun near Bensouda. Tests indicate Bensouda had a blood-alcohol level of 0.18, more than twice the legal limit, four hours after the shooting.
In Bensouda's apartment, police found a plateful of cocaine and two unspent 9 mm bullets that matched casings found in the stairwell.
