Anglo-French Hypocrisy Over Libya & Ivory Coast
Saturday, 12 March 2011 15:37
By Dida Jallow-Halake, London, UK. Below are the two main stories on Africa today (Friday 11th March), although by tomorrow both the dictators in Libya and Ivory Coast will thank their lucky stars that the natural tragedy in Japan will have taken the eyes of the world away from their man-made tragedy.
Of course, both Gaddafi and Ghagbo are dictators who are engaged in a “war against their own people”. But so are Pakistan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Azerbaijan – but these are our allies. The world watched two Christmases ago as Israel massacred the hemmed-in refugees of Gaza – not a sound from Obama, Sarkozy or Cameron because Israel is our ally too. We have known for months now that Ivory Coast was heading for a blood-bath, and the UN has warned on a weekly basis. But nothing will be done to save the people of Ivory Coast because they have no oil. So with Ivory Coast we can “standby”, just as we stood by in Rwanda and in Darfur.
Cameron and Sarkozy are determined to remove Gaddafi but it is clear that they are doing it for the most selfish or reasons: Oil. Pure and simple. And yet, a foray into the Libyan desert could be a diplomatic, political disaster and economic disaster for both Britain and France. It is Suez 1956 all over again (yours truly was 2 months old – and remembers that it was a humiliation for Britain and France!).
Libya: David Cameron warns that international community cannot 'stand by'

David Cameron has warned that the international community cannot "stand by" after the Gaddafi regime yesterday unleashed a "barbaric war" against rebels and the EU rejected his plan for a no-fly zone to protect civilians.
Ivory Coast: 'on the brink of a bloodbath'
David Smith in Abidjan, guardian.co.uk, Friday 11 March 2011 17.38GMT “Abobo, usually one of the most populated suburbs of Abidjan, has become a place of terror, bloodshed and desperation. No one is safe in Abobo. Women were slaughtered in a hail of machine-gun fire at a demonstration. Men have been beaten and burned alive because they were judged to belong to the wrong tribe or nationality. UN peacekeepers have been shot at and western journalists have been roughed up and threatened with lynching.”
