An eye witness accounts of Journalist Chief Manneh’s story
Saturday, 03 July 2010 22:02
Frequent reports of arrests and detentions are a commonplace in Gambia. In addition to the many
documented detentions of an array of people perceived as opponents of Yahya Jammeh, there are numerous others whose fate remain unknown, thanks to the manner in which they got disappeared.
The case of Gambian journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh is perhaps the most bizarre of all… As a journalist with no record of any political affiliation, Manneh’s continued detention remains a baffling experience to all those who care about his case.
The government in Banjul, including President Yahya Jammeh himself, continues to deny any knowledge of his whereabouts. Yet there are ample evidences to show that the continued denial by the government is in fact baseless.
Yaya Dampha, a journalist and human right activist, is one person who has seen Mr Manneh live in custody of state security personnel. Dampha has given evidences in court as part of a sub regional hearing on the case, which subsequently held the Gambian government culpable and ordered it to release the journalist and compensate him.
Until now, the government has refused. Manneh’s case has even been mentioned at the level of the US senate; to no avail.
In this audio report, Dampha, himself a living experience of the brutality against human rights activists and journalists, recounts how he sighted Manneh on a number of occasions at various places within the country and gives the account of former colleagues of Manneh who saw him been taken away by known Gambian NIA officers.

I see we are making great progress here! And after they have been placed on that WALL OF SHAME,next stop? The NO FLY LIST! Hey! We could even include Isatou Njie Saidy on that NO FLY LIST! All embassies in the Gambia would be given photos and names of these thugs and their backers!Ha! ha! How do you like that VP? No more shopping trips to Taiwan!
I think ALA's suggestion makes sense.I am sure that there are people who have seen things happening on the ground and could provide tangible video evidence if only we Gambians can overcome our fear and start doing something about our present predicament.
I envision a day soon where a website would be set up with a WALL OF SHAME where photos of all those NIA thugs and their backers could be posted.Yes,it is time we NAME and SHAME those that are aiding and abetting the atrocities of this dictatorship.Maybe seeing their photos on the world wide web will make these thugs hesitate.
This is the information age and it is a war for public opinion. If we can make them constantly look over their shoulders while doing their dirty errands, that would be a great step.
A friend once suggested that friends and neighbors should try and discreetly record on their mobile phones when the NIA come to arrest people in their neighborhood. At the time it sounded foolish to me but imagine how valuable a few seconds of video posted on YouTube of Chief Manneh being arrested would have been? A new form of civil disobedience? I am all for it!
