Alpha Conde takes oath with promise to unite Guinea
Tuesday, 21 December 2010 21:27
By JollofNews CorrespondentAlpha Conde made history on Tuesday after taking oath as Guinea’s first democratically elected president.
Conde said he hopes to unify his country the same way Nelson Mandela unified South Africa at the end of the struggle against apartheid.

The long time opposition politician, once sentenced to death by former dictator Saikou Touray, and then given a life sentence by another dictator Lansana Conteh, Conde has always liken himself to Mandela.
"I will try in my small way to be Guinea's Mandela and unite every son of Guinea," he said on Tuesday after taking his oath.
"The restoration of social cohesion and national unity requires a collective look at our painful past," he added.
Among high profile guests who graced the land mark ceremony in Conakry were heads of states from within the sub region, including the leaders of Guinea Bissau, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Senegal. And according to a presidential statement in Banjul, Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh departed Banjul early Tuesday morning to attend the ceremony. Also present as President Conde took oath of office on Tuesday was South African President Jacob Zuma.
