African anti-tobacco Consortium unveils multilingual Resource Centre

By Kemo ChamAnti-tobacco activism has been bolstered with the inauguration of a virtual resource centre dedicated to sub-Saharan Africa.
The African Tobacco Control Consortium (ATCC), a coalition of public health organizations focused on preventing the tobacco epidemic in Africa, today unveiled the center which comprise a virtual library with materials relevant to tobacco issues.

http://www.africatobaccocontrol.org is a multilingual (English, French and Portuguese) website with extensive information on a wide range of tobacco control issues and highlights on various developments around tobacco control in the sub-Saharan African region. It provides information in all three languages about the different components of the ATCC project including grants, technical assistance and how it plans to support tobacco control advocates and organisations in this part of the continent.
ATCC, coordinated by the American Cancer Society, comprises a number of regional anti-tobacco organisations like the Africa Tobacco Control Alliance (ATCA), Africa Tobacco Control Regional Initiative (ATCRI) Framework Convention Alliance (FCA), Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK), and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union).
“The site shall be updated regularly and shall highlight tobacco control profiles of the 46 countries of the sub-Saharan African region as defined by WHO as well as offer an in-depth knowledge on each country through collated researches and studies,” said a statement from ATCC.
With the opening of this unique one-stop e-warehouse for tobacco control resources, it is envisaged that consumers with in the nearest future engage in interactive debates as relevant to current and pertinent tobacco control issues. The facility provides space for experience sharing among tobacco control stakeholders in the region.
