Gambia Settles For AU Peace Council

tangra(DailyNews) – The Gambia has settled for membership in the African Union’s Peace and Security Council as President Yahya Jammeh pulled out from AU chairmanship bid to focus ‘on domestic politics’.

In a press statement, The Gambia’s foreign affairs ministry says the country has been elected from the West African region for the period 2012 to 2014.

Foreign ministry attributes the country’s successful election to AU PSC to President Jammeh’s “keen interest in fostering peace and stability fortangra sustainable development throughout the continent and beyond.

This, according to the press statement is evidenced by President Jammeh’s mediation efforts in Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, and Senegal as well as troubled parts of the world where The Gambia commits peacekeeping troops.

Composed of 15 countries, of which five are elected by AU Assembly to three-year terms, and ten to two-year terms, African Union’s Peace and Security Council is the organ of the continental grouping in charge of enforcing the Union decisions.

The Gambia’s election was made at the recently concluded 18th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Alongside Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Tanzania, Lesotho, Egypt and Angola, the natural resource-poor tiniest country in mainland Africa assumes its mandate in the Council on April 1, 2012.

The new members replace Burundi, Chad, Mali, Namibia and Rwanda, joining five countries - Libya, Equatorial Guinea, Kenya, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, who are currently serving in the Council for a three-year term.

Well you know me Kang Kang...I don't get fooled by Gambian's these days.

Both Mr Jammeh and me know the Gambian... very well.

We know which button's to push.

Is it not a completley amusing Gambian phenonomen....that when me and Mr Jammeh push the Gay or Islam button...

All Gambian's of all persuasions..stand to alarm... like a gang of Merekats... watching an Eagle take a shit.

Whoahahahaha !!!!

Yahya Jammeh is such a very clever Gambian.

On your well reasoned suggestion...

Would it not be "African"...to raise the position of the African traditional Kings and former Presidents to a separate "empowered" African Union Congress.

Akin to the British House of Lords?

or the US senate?

I think Africa is lacking the "second chamber"

I mean Mandela and Obasnajo and Wade and Jawara...etc...

could bring "experience" to African politics.

A Very interesting and original idea...Kang Kang. Very commendable and democratic.

However...do you think the over inflated ego's of African Presidents could handle such a "brilliant idea" ?

..and do you think the chosen representative..could be allowed the freedom of a none national conscience ?

Quoting Radiokangkang:
I think presidents shouldn,t head the AU, some one with vast experience who is african and most qualify to put africa together without any favor, should be elected to run the affairs of the union, that will automatically eliminate the little differences between them that some times becomes an obstacle to electing the right president for the job.

RadioK, for once I absolutely concur with you. Perhaps someone should suggest that to the AU.

I think it becomes evident..that Africa is slowly but positively...forgeing a confident Self Identity "Vehicle"...that

can travel...into the 21st century.

The EU and The UK appear to be massed behind the American slipstream.{unfortunately}

The Obamarama.. International
"low profile" band waggon continues..its uncertain "bumpy" journey.

Considering the "Mad Hatters" Republican Tea Party...agenda...

Obama should be re-elected without much difficulty.

However..the China/ Russia partnership does not bode well for the West...as the next 20 years will be quite challenging for the "Old Boys World"

The human rights..platform...is such a weak idea..for The African elite club of self perpetuating governments.

China have the spare cash to pick up a lot of loose business in Africa.

Unless The West..start direct infrastructual investment is Africa...they will remain in decline.

AU members need to be serious on reforming this organisation. This orgnisation had largely ingnored the human right abuse in the continent simply because the majority of it members are dictators.

Every dictators like to use this organisation through their wealth to secure/promote their dictatorail behaviours on their own people, just like what Gadaffi did. This must be stop & Au need to be reform to serve Africa/Africans.

Possibly an encouraging sign that the AU is comiting to an "inclusive" agenda and not an "exclusive" agenda.

Congratulations to Gambia.

We recall Ambassador Wells remarks..that President Jammeh is a "major player" in the region.

There can never be any meaningful development without Peace and Stability.
