Gambia's Jammeh Pulls Out Of Race For AU Assembly Presidency

(RFI) – Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has pulled out of the race for the presidency of the African Union’s Assembly, Gambia’s foreign minister told RFI on Thursday. This leaves Benin’s President Boni Yayi the likely winner of the rotating one-year term.

“The president took the decision to withdraw his candidacy,” Mamadou Tangara said after a closed-door meeting of foreign ministers from the Economic Community for West African States (Ecowas).

The other main candidate for the regional bloc’s presidency is thought to be Benin’s Yayi. The move is likely to pave the way for him to replace current AU president Equatorial Guinea’s Theodoro Obiang.

Tangara told RFI that following Jammeh’s reelection in November for a fourth term Yahya felt it better to concentrate on domestic politics.

“He wants to devote the first year of his election to satisfy and meet the needs and aspirations of the Gambian people,” Tangara said, speaking on the sidelines of the AU summit in Addis Ababa.

Tangara said Gambia had withdrawn in favour of Benin while Ecowas had reached a consensus on Yayi’s candidacy.

The AU Assembly is the bloc’s most important decision-making body. It is made up heads of state from all 54 members of the organisation.

This year’s summit also sees another leadership contest in the chairmanship of the AU Commission. This pits incumbent chairman Jean Ping against South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Human history has been a catalogue of barbarity since time began.

Yet throughout the recent concourse,
of the last 100 years, where war upon war has only interupted progress.{briefly}

Progress has continued human momentum towards a better future for the citizen.

Healthcare...Law accessable to everyman, employment/welfare rights embodied in civil rights {hard fought for}
..and education as a right for every child, has brought about the modern social contract, between state and citizen.

There are now modern workable road maps for developing nation states to follow, underpinned by the "wishes" of the people.

Mr Jammeh has never followed progressive history.His travel has been a painful colusion with Castro, Gaddafi, Chavez and Aminajhad....and Taiwan.

Where money was available to reinforce such bankrupt colonial morality by force.

Dr Janneh..is the peoples future.

Mike, peoples do buy a house to save money from renting, it is part of the American dream to buy a house, for the Goverment to own a property to accomodate all it staffs is going to save us a lot money down the road.

every country is in debt, that will be paid by the next generation, America for example has a debt of 7 trillion dollars, even social security will not be able to pay the baby boomers, and these goes to every country.

Mike, Gambia has the cheepest commodities cost in the subregion, we'll continue that mergin regardless of the global crisis.

Yes, we do need factories to help the workforce, if you bring one, and i bring one, then you what it will help close the gab.

You cannot eat cement Kang Kang...

Where are the Gambian jobs and the Gambian factories.?

Foroyaa have listed some of Gambia's debtors....the amount of debt is crippling.

Three cheers for Allah's World Bank... but a future generation will have to pay back your debts....

Where is the semblance of the economic "Giant" that will make you a super power?

Watch what happens when fuel subsidy is cut and your paying Value Added Tax.

A bag of rice at 1500 dalasis..is possible.

Thats the equivalent of your average..monthly salary.

You APRC.." bigwigs " will not suffer...thats for sure.

Jammeh better look back...

Theres a train coming !!!

Kang Kang...Understanding the Global economic "imbalance"

In 1982 I bought Italian slush machines{crushe d flavoured ice} and ice cream making machines.

The slush m/c cost me £600 and retailed at £1100

The ice cream m/c cost £1400 and retailed for £2400

Today the Italian slush m/c sells for £2400 and there ice cream m/c sells for £4800

The Chinese buy in bulk the Italian compressors{ the cold conversion device}

Then assemble/build/manufacture the same Machines in Bejing.

Today Jan 2012 {30 years later}

I can buy a Chinese slush m/c direct from China{including delivery}

for less than £600

and an ice cream m/c for £900

Thats what the West is competing against.

This analogy..runs right across all sections of commerce.
