Darboe Challenges Jammeh's AU Chairmanship Bid
Monday, 23 January 2012 13:33
(JollofNews) – Gambian opposition leader, Ousainou Darboe, has challenged President Yahya Jammeh's bid
to become the next chairman of the African Union. Mr Darboe who is leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) said Mr Jammeh does not deserve to hold the position of African Union chairman due to his poor record on human rights and good governance.
"I would have thought that the African Head of States would examine, scrutinise the individual among themselves and see who is the proper person to hold the position,” Mr Darboe told Jollofnews just after holding a political rally on Saturday at Ebony Junction, Serrekunda.

“In my view, he [Jammeh] does not really deserve to be chairman of the African Union. He is doing everything contrary to what the AU stands for as far as the promotion of democracy and rule of law is concerned. The fact that one pretends to be a Pan Africanist doesn't mean that you deserve to be given such a position."
Commenting on whether his party would contest the forth coming National Assembly elections in the Gambia, the UDP leader said his party has no plans to boycott the elections.
"I have just stated that a central committee meeting will be convened and it will direct us. I have stated that it might not be prudent to boycott the elections," he said.
The veteran human rights lawyer ruled himself out of contesting for any constituency saying: “I have said that in the past and have never contested any National Assembly elections. I will not contest one. It is not fair for a party leader to put himself up for election in a constituency where a supporter has established support and intends to represent his people. Once candidates know their constituency, they should be left to contest there. My constituency is the Gambia."
Mr Darboe reiterated his party’s stance with regard to the 2011 Presidential elections.
"We have rejected the results of the presidential elections. We did not accept it as the true expression of the will of the Gambian people," he said.

THANKS BRO. SO FAR AS OUR NATIONAL CAUSE IS FOR "UDP PARTY AND ITS MILITANTS ONLY."
All dictators starting from Hitler to Gadaffi/jammeh have ambitions which never change their statue as dictators. Dictator will always remine as a dictator as long his ambition is to denied his people the social justice they deserve.
Jammeh being a chairman of AU,is of no benefit to The Gambia/Africa as long as dictatorship is not dismantle in many African countries.
THE AMBITION OF A DICTATOR IS THERE TO BENEFIT HIMSELF AND THE IDNORANTS WORKING FOR/WITH HIM; BUT NOT THE PEOPLE THEY RULE
quote Mr Darboe
“In my view, he [Jammeh] does not really deserve to be chairman of the African Union. He is doing everything contrary to what the AU stands for as far as the promotion of democracy and rule of law is concerned".
comment:
I don`t think Mr darboe is critising jammeh`s AMBITION but his character of governing(dicta torship).
cont: above
So because you do not agree with my opinion....then I should be excluded?
So in that vane....should all the Gambian's/African's in the UK...be excluded from a view on British or Gambian political opinion?
Should they not be entitled to freely express there views?
Both Mr Jammeh and Halifa Sallah and many others comment freely on Britain.
{and long may they be free to do so}
Are you promoting a restricted version of freedom of speech and expression?
Is that view only to include your opinion?
..and if those opinions do not concur with yours...should you then have the audacity to become downright insulting?
I think we have little in common or anything to share of real value...my friend.
But Sleep well.
The exchange was interesting.
I am not associated with any opposition group but I know for sure that the last elections was fundamentally flawed and u blame people for complaining about that? You need to check your head and stop thinking that u are big. You are not.
After all this is gambian matter. Who are u to make judgement?
So you agree then.?
Depressing isn't it just?
Some of us "ambitious" business clerks...rose to become considerate employers and business/wealth generators.
Identify yourself...and your track record.
Mr Jammeh...has ambition...The opposition should not criticise...anyones ambition.
For the President of the smallest country... in the vast continent of Africa....
to become AU Chairman...would be significant.
As was the appointment of Ms Bensouda.
I have and will always wish The Gambia every success.
I have no time for moaners. Only do-ers
You are too depressing, my friend.
