Amnesty Int’l Rebukes Gambia’s Jammeh Over Activists’ Treason Sentencing

DR_JANNEH.jpg2(Press Release) – Amnesty International today called for the immediate release of four activists arrested over the distribution of T-shirts calling for an end to dictatorship in the Gambia.

One activist, Dr Amadou Scattred Janneh, the country's former Minister for Information and Communication, was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour for treason. Modou Keita, Ebrima Jallow and Michael Uche Thomas were each sentenced to three years with hard labour for sedition.

The four were arrested in June 2011 after distributing T-shirts made by the NGO ‘Coalition for Change – The Gambia’ (CCG) which featured the slogan "End to Dictatorship Now".DR_JANNEH.jpg2

“The conviction of these men is a violation of their rights to freedom of expression, assembly and association,” said Lucy Freeman, Amnesty International’s researcher on the Gambia.

“President Jammeh is once again proving that he does not tolerate any form of criticism and is ruthlessly persecuting anyone who speaks out against his regime.”

Dr Amadou Scattred Janneh, who has American citizenship, was arrested in his office on 7 June for being in possession of the CCG T-shirts. Michael Uche Thomas, a Nigerian, and Modou Keita and Ebrima Jallow, both Gambians, were arrested on the same day, accused of printing the T-shirts.

The four men were sentenced at the Special Criminal Court in Banjul. Charges were initially brought at the Banjul Magistrate Court on 13 June and the case was later transferred to the High Court.

“These men are prisoners of conscience and must be released immediately and unconditionally. Gambia must stop such acts of persecution and allow criticism to be heard in the country," said Lucy Freeman.
Journalists and activists in Gambia, are routinely subjected to human rights violations such as unlawful arrests and detentions, torture, unfair trials, harassment, assaults and death threats, making it extremely difficult for them to do their work.

Amnesty International has urged the international community to publicly condemn human rights violations in the Gambia, such as arbitrary arrests, torture, extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearance

Notes to editors
According to CCG spokesperson Ndey Tapha Sosseh, “The Coalition for Change - The Gambia is an organization with the objectives of ending The Gambia’s dictatorship and as well as the climate of fear that has so consumed Gambian society.”

This is the time when all Gambians should come together and fight this wicked dictator (I can't call him a president). He cannot jail or kill the whole country. People should start speaking their minds and stop hiding in corner and saying "ndeisan" to Amadou and co. These people put their lives on the line for us. The least we can do is to show our support. People like Amadou Scattred Janneh do not have to do this, he was living large in the United States and was working for the Government of the United states. The only reason he did this is his love for his country and his people. If everyone stands up to Yahya then change will happened, one person can't do it. Everyone in the Gambia is affected directly or indirectly by this Animal. Please, people lets think about our kids and grandkids and make sacrifices to make a change, if it means death then so be it. we are all going to die someday, lets die for a course. Yahya thinks of Gambians as cowards, i know we are not.

Malick...I wish all my predictions never came true.

I do not want to be right when there is so much wrong.

I would rather be wrong and pray for right to prevail.

Definately....Amnesty International are the most powerful cross border human rights organisation in the World. With a permanent membership of over two million and affiliates that exceed many millions if not a billion supporters.

They are also a powerful lobby to International government.

When Fatou Bensouda referred to other org's that are comitted to human rights other than the ICC. AI..is that foremost body in that field of International human rights advancement.

For any government to ignore there advice is therefore not advised.

We are reassured by there interest in
Dr Janneh and collegues.

We await to view the position of the American Ambassador/ Government there associates and all international stakeholders..

Thank you so Much Amnesty International we all should work together to condemn this imprisonment of Dr. Janneh and co. Na d US government need to step up too because this guy Amadou Janneh is a United State Citizen and America has every right to speak against this, condemn it and take necessary actions to ensure his immediate release. US government should not be soft about this because Amadou a citizen like any other America..they owe him protection of his life and freedom so US you need to step up against this brutal thing going on in The Gambia against your citizen. Thanks
