Foroyaa Reporters To Go On Strike

(JollofNews) - Gambian journalists working for the opposition Foroyaa Newspaper are threatening to go on an indefinite strike over poor working conditions.

According to reports reaching JollofNews, the reporters have already outlined a list of demands to the papers’ editors seeking the appointment of freelance reporters and payment of social security entitlements.

"If these above recommendations are not given due and urgent consideration by 15th January, 2012, we will embark on a sit-down strike," the disgruntled pen pushers said in a petition letter which was clandestinely obtained by JollofNews.

Another bone of contention is the request made by the reporters for one of the paper’s editor Halifa Sallah move to the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) office in order to create more rooms for reporters.

“Considering that the besieging of the office premises by politicians is of a great concern and we recommend that there be a FOROYAA_PIXclear separation of politics from journalism. Also, since the paper is the oldest in the country, we recommend that it comes on a daily basis," reads the petition.

Reports added that two meetings were held on 16th and 19th December 2011 between the disgruntle reporters and the editorial board of Foroyaa during which the editors promised to address some of the issues raised before the New Year.

When contacted for comments, Foroyaa’s managing editor, Sam Sarr declined to speak about the matter saying: “I don't think it is a matter of concern for you.”

It is a contradiction...because on the one hand, they hold the view that Mr Sallah is insignificant and use insults and other derogatory terms to express this view...but the implication of holding such a view,on the other hand,is to acknowledge that Mr Sallah has so much importance and influence that he ALONE can derail the entire alliance process..

Mr Sallah has no power over any political party, not even PDOIS...Failure of the opposition to unite is a collective responsibility /failure and the sooner we accept this, the better for everyone..

Well said Radiokangkang ...People must be able to draw a line between criticism and insults...Civility,maturi ty,respect and a certain degree of intellect is needed for participating in online forums...Thus,we are able to understand an issue, express our views on it,agree/disagree with other contributors or criticise where we feel necessary....To behave otherwise is to expose a lack of these qualities....

No one is above criticism, espec ially those who hold public office or aspire to hold public office....However,since the beginning of efforts to form an opposition alliance and it's eventual failure, the personal attacks against the person of Halifa Sallah has gone far beyond mere criticisms..It's as though these attackers hold him solely responsible for the failure of a united opposition...AMAZINGLY CONTRADICTORY

Assan, You right, you've a right to criticise Halifa Sallah, but you dont have the right to insult him, that is the different. I knew Halifa and his humble family, i swear to Allah, they're good and pure Muslims, great parents whom i knew very well, one of his brothers is my childhood friend, Mawdo Sallah, please save your insults and continue your comments, i think you do have point sometimes.

This is why educated fools inAfrica find it difficult to become presidents because they tend to look down on others and think they know something..Halifa cannot speakno good english more than me nor an ordinary high school student from west/some african countries, but they will come to places like Gambia to have that guts to think like no one knows bettwer than them that's why Gambians are teaching him a lesson he shall never forget..they are telling him nigger we ain't fools we don't think ur good fit enough to rule us because you acts stupid..that's what happened if an intellectual becomes stupid he's corrected by high school graders by denying him votes..stupid people..
