Guinea-Bissau Opposition Reject Interim President

(AFP) - Guinea-Bissau's opposition rejected Tuesday the appointment of the National Assembly speaker as interim head of the chronically unstable state after the death of President Malam Bacai Sanha in Paris.

"The Democratic Collective expresses its complete rejection of the ascension of National Assembly leader Raimundo Pereira to the post of interim president," read a statement from the 14-party umbrella group.

The coalition said it could not endorse Pereira to a position where he would have power to "dismiss the current Attorney General to avoid

prosecuting suspects in the suspected assassination of President Joao Bernardo Vieira and army chief General Batista Tagme Na Waie" in 2009.

Vieira was killed by soldiers in revenge for the death of Tagma Na Waie hours earlier in a bomb attack at army headquarters.

While investigations have never yielded clear suspects publicly, the opposition has often accused Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Junior of involvement in the 2009 events. Gomes is seen as very close to Pereira.

Both are from the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde which holds 67 of 100 parliamentary seats.

The Party for Social Renewal which holds 28 seats is among those refusing Pereira's role as interim leader.

Sanha died in the Val de Grace military hospital in Paris on Monday where he was admitted in late November with an unknown illness and placed in an artificial coma.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday urged Pereira to organise elections as soon as possible.

In a letter to the speaker he said Sanha's death "represents a great loss for Guinea-Bissau to which he dedicated his life ... he sought to preserve national unity and guide his country through the pitfalls of a turbulent political life."

"The Bissau-Guinean people are orphaned. They are waiting for you to guide them... towards a peaceful, orderly transition and that you quickly organise free and fair elections."

Sanha becomes the fourth president in a row not to see out a five-year term -- the previous three were either ousted or killed.

This will be the second time Pereira has had to step in as interim leader, after also taking the reins following Vieira's death in 2009.

Sanha was elected that same year, vowing to reform a powerful army which has long been tangled with the state and implicated in cocaine trafficking in a state whose history is studded with coups and political vengeance.

Sanha was severely ill and out of the country on December 26 when a group of renegade soldiers attacked army headquarters in Bissau in the latest mutiny, which the regime said was an attempted coup.

The International Red Cross said Tuesday it had visited 38 soldiers being held after the attack and "will convey our observations confidentially to the authorities."

A military source told AFP the army had been placed on full alert after Sanha's death. However life went on as usual in Bissau with shops open and no security forces present.

According to the country's constitution the head of the National Assembly has 60 days to organise fresh elections.

Bax,

You are right about constitution and this isn’t what the opposition is challenging.

This issue is, this person has a conflict of interest in an investigation that will determine Guinea Bissau's moving forward towards peace. You cannot achieve peace without justice.

Hang on a minute guys...! It is said that under their constitution,th e Speaker of the National Assembly becomes the Interim President in the event of the President's death...

How can opposing a constitutional requirement be considered Democratic ? The best route for Guinea Bissau is to allow the constitutional process of filling the Office Of President to be completed....And that begins with the Speaker becoming the Interim President...Anything else is likely to lead to more chaos and a possible Military Coup.

Jamberr,

This is about the Bissau Guineans standing up for what is right. You have to have the Will to fight for this RIGHT in your own country, then democracy will come.

Guinea Bissau does not have democracy yet; they have the Will to fight for their rights. This is what they are doing. This is Will is what is lacking in the Gambians.

Sound good unlike The Gambia where nobody dares to challenge the state .The Bissau Guineans are enjoying the wonders of democracy and its dimensions. The rule in which no one have obsulute power to decide for their country . Decisions comes from different angles and are often given time to be debated upon without fear of repression or hinderance from any party.Shame on the present day Gambia ; these contry that used to be the BEACON OF DEMOCRACY IN WEST AFRICA.Twennty years ago The Gambias democratic principles was second to none in our continent particuarly our sub region .We then had a better democracy than all the ECOWAS states even Senegal envied us. But now we have become the least democratic state in West Africa. WHY ? We are blessed with a very greedy president whom nobody knows what makes him think that he is a God sent to lead the Gambian people.WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH SHIT STIRER YAYA JAMMEH IS.
