Senegal Army To Pursue Rebels Into Gambia

CASA_Pix(Africareview) - An infuriated Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade has ordered the country’s armed forces to pursue the fleeing Casamance separatist rebels “everywhere even inside Gambia”.

The order comes in the aftermath of a deadly attack on Tuesday by separatist rebels that killed about ten soldiers in the troubled southern Casamance region.

“They could be hiding in the forests and across the border to the Gambia, but pursue them wherever they may be found and let them face the law”, PresidentCASA_Pix Wade told the army leadership in Dakar.

If only temporarily, the incident shifted public attention away from months of political polarisation as the president gears to contest for a controversial third mandate which the opposition are insisting is unconstitutional.

President Wade’s order is certain to heighten the already tense relations with neighbouring Gambia, which the Senegalese government suspects of aiding the Casamance separatists.

Last year, Senegal broke diplomatic relations with Iran over an arms shipment Dakar claimed was intended for the rebels. The shipment was confiscated in Nigeria.

Military wing
Like many other Senegalese, President Wade is of the firm conviction that the rebel Movement des Forces Democratique de Casamance (or Mfdc) which is fighting for the region’s independence is backed by Gambia and Guinea Bissau.

But since the assassination of the pro-Mfdc Gen Ansoumana Mané of Guinea Bissau in the late Nineties, Senegal’s suspicion has increasingly been fixated on the Gambia.

Quote Bax “...Gambia...entangled in the Cassamance issue...”

Comment:

Mr Bax, this is how any sensible person reflects. Let’s remember, EXCEPT for Wade’s sense of diplomacy, Senegal got ALL rights internationally , to incursion(s) into Gambia to pursue armed bandits & their rebel-chief in kanilai IF need be, to stop the senseless spill of their citizens’ blood. I guess as you rightly stated, the patriotic thing is for GENUINE Gambians to get rid of the cancerous-drug-baron- chief-armed-bandit at Kanilai who will cause us the trouble. After all, what AVAIL/BENEFITS does the Cassamance armed banditry being sponsored by yaya jammeh in kanilai got to do with AUTHENTIC Gambian INTEREST that anyone need to die for? It is PURELY DELUSIONAL if any thought we can match Senegal in war.

How did The Gambia get so entangled in the Cassamance issue that the Senegalese have suspicions about us ? Rather than pledging to shed our last drop of blood to defend our country or suggest what our commander will do to the Senegalese soldiers, should n't our government be doing all it can to allay the fears of the Senegalese government and people ?

Sengal is right to be concerned about the recent increase in the fire power of the rebels, and their suspicions that the rebels are getting support from outside is genuine.

Gambia being their closest neighbour, and given the record of Jammeh and his associates,(Bab a Jobe & Victor Bout) who are linked to arms trafficking, one can understand why fingers are pointed in our direction.

I am sad to say this, but Senegal is NO MATCH to The Gambia, and a military conflict between us can only end in one way.And ALL sensible people know which way that is.

That is illegal Mr Wade eventhough we may not legitimaize jammeh as our president(CEO) ,still Gambia is an independent state. We, Gambians and Senegalis are praying everyday for a better leadership in both countries in the future. since Wade and Jammeh(who keep on allegating one another for their own interest) are dark ages i our history.

You not legitimizing Jammeh as president is like a dog taking shit in France, nobody in Gambia would be bothered by the smell of that shit..

But i can smell from your comment above that you are already bothered by the smell of the shit(in your view). We are aware of your stands but with due respect we can all agree that these both leaders have failed their people, and we deserve better ones. The time will come and is very near, be concious to know about that:be blessed!!

those who deny to senegal the right to pursue rebels in gambia are ignoring the international right and the agreement between two countries. senegal has the legal right to hunt rebel even if they are in the state house.

It is true that senegalese soldiers have no right to pursue rebells all the way into our homeland (The Gambia) but do we Gambians needed rebells in our shores? Hell no we don'tefore talking blah blah about we will defend them or split our blood to defend our sovereignty let's talk about whether or not we need dem moddafucking rebells in our land, because we have the same rebel leader in our state house ignorant yahya Jammeh. We are talking as if we are create safe heaven for rebells in The Gambia and until we. Interfere no more between rebels and senegalese government Gambia will always be at risk, mistrust between them and sengal.
