The men Yaya Kongira, Daniel Mendy, Mama Banja and Muhammad Fatty who are on a national tour, consulting with youth branches on their role in national politics and development were later released unconditionally by the police without being told the reasons for their arrest.

However, a statement from the GMC secretariat said the youth leaders were arrested in connection with a bale of party T-shirts police found in their possession.
“The Youth Brigade members insisted that they had committed no crime, and if the Police believed that they had infringed the law for carrying GMC T-shirts, they should arrest them. As they attempted to walk out of the Police Station together, the National Youth Coordinator, Muhammad Fatty was told that he was under arrest. Hours later, he was not told what offense he had committed, and all four were later released unconditionally,” the statement said.
Sometime last year, the parents of GMC Leader Mai Ahmad Fatty and his brother were arrested and detained over-night for pasting his picture on the wall of the family house and for raising GMC flag in the compound.
GMC Leadership is calling on the authorities to desist from restraining the free movement of its members and supporters in conformity with their constitutional rights.
“The right to political activities is an entrenched provision of the Constitution [of the Gambia] which should be observed by all organs and agents of the State''.
In the interest of maintaining peace and political stability, GMC urges the National Security Council to intervene on the part of all security agencies not to interfere with the lawful exercise of its members’ constitutional and political rights.
As stakeholders, it is of cardinal importance that security agencies do not provoke situations that may over-heat the polity, by unnecessarily heightening the political temperature in the country than it already is.”

We all know that Jammeh is just trying to buy time as he knows that he has won a disputed election and international scrutiny of his regime is mounting.
It is just unfortunate that some opposition figures are choosing to flee instead of standing up and fighting as some of their loyalist are doing on the ground.
