(JollofNews) –
Lawyer Ousainou Darboe of Gambia’s main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has rejected results of Thursday’s presidential polls, saying the whole electoral process was “neither free nor fair.”

The electoral commission declared President Yahya Jammeh winner of the race, polling 72 percent of the votes as compared to Mr. Darboe’s 17 percent.

In a statement, Mr. Darboe swiftly expressed his party’s grievances. “UDP/GMC United Alliance vehemently and unconditionally rejects the results of the just

concluded Presidential Elections as announced by the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission. The results are bogus, fraudulent, and constitute a capricious usurpation of the will of the people,” reads a UDP/GMC statement obtained by Jollofnews.

While urging “Gambian citizens not to be hoodwinked by the results of such a conspicuously flawed process,” Lawyer Darboe urged the international community to refrain from validating what he called “the results of this preposterous fabrication.” He said his party and its allies would “respond to these unacceptable results with appropriate action.”

Mr. Darboe’s claims came after the regional economic grouping ECOWAS refused to send an observer team to monitor the Gambia’s presidential polls, complaining that the electoral process was marred by intimidation and unfairness.

Yahya Jammeh of the Alliance for Patriotic Re-orientation and Reconciliation (APRC) received 470,550 votes, representing 72 percent. Mr. Darboe secured 114,177 votes while Hamat Bah, an independent candidate, got 73,060 votes.

The electoral commission put the turnout figure at 83 percent.

Let us keep in mind that we are one people. Tribalism has no place in our community.

Sky... If it turns out that Jammeh won through fraud (I hesitate to say this as no proof has been produced so far) then it would be legimate and constitutional for the alleged winner to seek to claim his rightful MANDATE by any means possible...And it would be morally right for the International Community to intervene to transfer power into the rightful hands...But only if there is incontrovertibl e proof that the opposition was deprived of a deserved victory....

I agree entirely that Darboe and UDP as well as United Front should accept defeat in the Presidential and start strategising for the National Assembly Elections....Someone has claimed to be in possession of video evidence to proof fraudulent vote...I would like to see that evidence....I am not convinced (until I see the proof ) that there was any massive fraud on polling day to significantly alter the result in Jammeh's favour.... The actual voting and counting processes are as fair and free as anywhere in the world... The registration process is a completely different thing and prone to fraud on a massive scale due to the practice of accepting ATTESTATION, signed by 5 elders ,as proof of citizenship and a ticket to a voter's card...No National Documents produced...

But the opposition knew this prior to the elections ,so they could not use that to reject the result ....Until proof of massive fraud is produced, result should stand....

Mr Darboe should accept defeat..gracefully....and step down.

The Gambia needs..its peace and stability

and a significant period of reflection.

A new day has dawned....and the reality is that..a new collective of consensus politics will emerge.

Sometimes...victory is born..through defeat.

Quoting LION KING:
This was the most free and fair election ever held in Africa. Darboe knows that his party will not give him another chance to contest the next election and that is why he doesn't want this opportunity slip away from his hands. Expect, full maturity from his side, otherwise he will live to regret his decisions. He needs to be very very careful of GMC,if not,Mai Fatty will throw him in a hole where he will never come out off.Let sit aside and another U.D.P figure runs during the next election. He is not the only one who can lead the U.D.P.There are people who are even more educated and smarter than him in his party. Even if they had joined force (11%+ 17%),they would have still been the under dog.
