Election 2011: APRC Banner Is A Threat To Peace - Darboe

DARBOE_ON_APRC_PIX(JollofNews) – As the Presidential Elections campaign gets into high gear, UDP leader Ousainou Daboe has described an APRC campaign banner which reads  “WE WILL NOT ONLY VOTE FOR HIM IN 2011, WE ARE READY TO DIE FOR HIM” as an incitement to violence.

Reacting to the use of such a message by the APRC, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party (UDP) said; “This is intimidating. This shows that the APRC is not ready for a free and fair election. What they want is to create an atmosphere of fear, increase political tensions, with a risk of provoking a violent election campaign,” he told JollofNews.

He called on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to assume its responsibility in pressing the APRC to withdraw their posters that can incite violence during the 11-day campaign period.

Speaking under condition of anonymity, a local journalist agreed with lawyer Darboe that words like “You will kill for what you are ready to die for,” are not desirable in peaceful election.

However, IEC Communication Officer, Joe Colley has countered to argue that journalists should take the message from a positive perspective.
He told Jollofnews: “You have to look at ways you can communicate with your readers in a more positive way. Their message can also be translated as the expression of a full support for their candidate".

Fula, stop being malicious and dishonest. Opposition supporters should compliment each other rather than undermining each others' party. The common enemy is Jammeh and Jammeh alone

Darboe is not crying foul but merely exposing APRC's threat to our national security and peacedul co-existence. That is a legitimate issue of public concern and it is right that Darboe pointed it our. He has also repeatedly said that UDP will not tolarete nonsense from any party or person regardless of status. It is the same message that he crossed over to the NORTH BANK REGION with.

Vote Darboe and give gambia a fresh start without Jammeh. The status is undignified and therefore unacceptable.

Thanks

Ah! Now Darboe is crying foul just for words on a poster. What about his word in his message on the topic "Lawyer Ousainou Darboe fires the first canon".

While the other parties are selling their agenda, Darboe is on the attack and crying foul.

You asked for a leveled field, you got it. In the days of the First Republic opposition parties never got equal time of coverage with the PPP on Radio Gambia. Now you got it! The incumbent is even giving strict warnings to his supporters to be tolerant and law abiding, then comes the UDP with confronting messages.

I will not be surprised to see him at the Senegalese embassy "seeking refuge" for no reason on the 24th of november.

But, no one will jeopardise the outcome of this elections and the peace of our nation, Insha Allah!

What else should we expect from the IEC... The slogan ' We are ready to DIE ' has no place in a democratic election process....If the slogan 'End dictatorship now' can land you with a treason charge ,how about ' ready to die' in a highly tense election period.... If we really cherish peace , it's time that group are excused the responsibility of governing the country...You can imagine the reaction if this has been a UDP campaign slogan.... The IEC Officials should have, at least ,censored this poster or order it's withdrawal.... Since its acceptable to use such incitement posters , why don't the opposition also produce posters to show that they are equally ready to die for their cause...That would send a clear message that they will not be cowed anymore ..,
