Why The Unbalanced Media Coverage For Gambia Oppositions?
Sunday, 16 October 2011 02:16
(Opinion) - I learnt with shock and dismay during the recent Independence Electoral Commission’s (IEC) talks with
the Gambian oppositions that there still exist unbalanced media coverage between the incumbent Mr Jammeh and the opposition parties ahead of the November 24 presidential polls. In my point of view, this unbalanced coverage is unjust and the IEC must strive to ensure that all parties receive equal treatment from the national media which
belong to us all.The Gambia has fallen below internationally acceptable standard of democracy, and these unfortunate human rights violations in the country only showed up its ugly head when Yahya Jammeh unlawfully overthrew a democratic government in 1994.
All hands should be on deck to end the dictatorship in the Gambia.
The opposition parties in the Gambia should assert themselves and come together so that come November 24, they would be elected to lead a Gambia that was once known for its democracy, transparency and above all peacefulness.
It’s a moral duty on the IEC - as the body responsible for the electoral affairs - to be independent as its name applies and ensure that Jammeh’s dictatorship does not interfere with the campaign of opposition parties.
It’s high time Gambians say NO to the current happenings in the Gambia by coming out in their thousands in November to boot out a government that has no mercy for its people.
