Senegalese Sports Minister Fired
Tuesday, 11 October 2011 16:36
The Senegal sports minister, Faustin Diatta, has been sacked by President Abdoulaye Wade in the wake of mounting criticisms from the Football Federation (FSF)
over poor funding and sluggish attention to the national team’s preoccupations. The government said it had begun the process of overhauling the entire sport system in the country, especially in football, as the Teranga Lions draw up preparation plans for the 2012 African Cup of Nations, after they booked their place in the fifth match day of the qualifiers.
After enduring 11 months without salary, coach Amara Traore last December denounced the non-payment of players’ air tickets as well as the slow process of issuing visas to footballers. Recently, Traore also attributed the team’s poor accommodation during an away fixture to the ministry, which he said did not disburse funds for a decent hotel.
Former sports minister, Abdoulaye Makhtar Diop, took over as interim, making him the eighth sports minister of the West African nation since 2000.
Senegal are one of the favourites of the Gabon / Equatorial Guinea 2012 after big guns Egypt, Cameroon and Nigeria failed to reach the finals.
