Police Refuses Permit for Gambian Bar's Protest March

Moses_Richard(JollofNews) - The Gambia Bar Association (GBA) Monday cancelled their planned protest march against the jailing of Moses B. Johnson Richards, after police refused to grant them permit to stage the demo. Richards is currently serving a two and half year jail term with hard labour after being found guilty of ‘giving false information’ to a public servant.
Outraged by the jailing, the Bar association condemned the move as a serious transgression of justice and vowed to protest in Banjul Monday. But a heavy securityMoses_Richard presence was noticed in and around the Banjul High Court when the lawyers arrived. In any case they could not proceed with the march after police denied them permit and dramatic U turn by the Richard himself.
“The planned procession by the members of the Bar did not take place as planned because a permit to do so was refused by the Inspector General of Police on grounds of public security and safety,” a statement obtained by Jollofnews stated.
However in a dramatic twist of event the very person at the centre of the fracas between government and the Bar, Mose Richard himself is alleged to have written to the President begging for mercy to be set free. Moses Richards was quoted by the State-owned media Gambia Radio Television Services (GRTS) disassociating himself from the planned protest and other actions of the Gambia Bar Association (GBA). ''The actions of the GBA from the beginning, has not helped my cause. I continue to apologize for my actions,'' announced GRTS, quoting Richards.
This move too is seen to be a big setback for the Bar and had not helped to boost confidence in the planned protest as evident in their reaction to Richard's alleged begging.
“In the light of Moses Richards' appeal for a pardon as well as his recent statements, the planned sit-in by the members of the GBA scheduled for Monday 10th October, 2011 at the High Court is cancelled,” added the statement.
Richards alleged begging for mercy had confused Gambians about the sincerity of the legal professionals with many questioning their integrity.

Folks,
It is a tradition in almost all countries that during national festivities such as the Eid, Chirstmas, New Year's etc, that the Head of State will pardon people. When was the last time you ever heard someone being pardoned by Yaya Jammeh? I personally will wait to see if Moses Richards will be released after degrading himself and Bar Association in public.

Since the dust has settle and Mr Richards had owned up himself with a written letter of clemency for wrong doing...I am positive that he will be released soon Inshallah.

Nonetheless, I think it is fair to reflect and make all ppl equal before law. Not one rule for Omar and another for Moses.

I pray that richards appeal for pardon gets answer solely by weight of his own letter for mercy

Sky? Let me what evidence have you got to embark on allegations against Moses Richards? Why does moses richards have to be any different from any gambian? Did the bar protested when omar sanyang was wrongly convited only to be release after an appeal?

My friend, there cannot be one law for the Banjul Mafia and another for egalitarians!

Let moses richards face full force of the law just like my own blood brother did!

Why is it that anytime a Banjullian gets arrested the whole Gambia turns upside down?

If my own family can be sentence to Mile 2 and the Bar never protest his innocence I see no reason why moses richards should face law.
