Heavy Sentence for Gambia 8 Narco Traffickers
Wednesday, 12 October 2011 22:45
(JollofNews) - A court in Gambia has sentenced today 8 foreign nationals to 50 years jail term after finding them guilty of
trafficking cocaine with a street value 1 billion US dollars. They are 4 Venezualans, 2 Ductch nationals, 1 Nigerian and 1 Mexican have also been fined 50 million dalasis (almost 340, 000 US dollars) each. After months of hearing, with the prosecution parading 19 witnesses, Magistrate Tabally came to the conclusion that the prosecution has ''proven its case beyond
reasonable doubt'' and the accused persons, who all pleaded not guilty, cannot deny the evidences before them. Defense counsel urged the court to temper justice with mercy, as his clients'' were all along of the best behaviour'' during their detention. ''The court has the right to impose a fine or a custodial sentence,'' recalled Lawyer Lamin S. Camara.
Despite what the defense advanced, the magnitude of the offence it seems convinced the court to set an example. ''We want to protect the citizens of this country to desist from drug trafficking. Such an offense has very bitter consequences, and for that reason the law has to take its course,'' said Magistrate Tabally while handing down his verdict.
Prior to the verdict, the crowded court room was astonished to learn that a Dutch national, who was among the accused persons, passed away last Sunday. ''I am sent by the Director General of Mile Two State central prisons to inform the court that Dennis Wilgo Winter passed away on the 9th October, 2011,'' explained prison officer Bubacarr Jah." This followed a 15 minutes stand down order granted by the presiding magistrate after defense counsel Lamin S. Camara protested that the judgement cannot proceed until the fate of 4th accused is known.
