Gbagbo Arrives At The Hague In ICC Custody

The former president of the Ivory Coast has been escorted to the Netherlands in International Criminal Court (ICC) custody hours after the court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for him.

Laurent Gbagbo arrived by plane at Rotterdam airport early on Wednesday to face an investigation by the ICC into killings, rapes and other abuses committed in the West African nation during a four-month conflict triggered by his refusal to cede power to Alassane Ouattara after last year's election.

Ouattara's forces, backed by French and UN troops, deposed Gbagbo in April and he has since been placed under house arrest in the northern town of Korhogo.

"They [Ivorian justice authorities] showed him the arrest warrant this morning," Bourthoumieux said by telephone from France, questioning the competence of the ICC to try Gbagbo.

'Victor's justice'

"I condemn ... this victor's justice," he added in an emailed statement.

A decision to try Gbagbo at the ICC would likely prove controversial among many Ivorians after Luis

Moreno-Ocampo, the ICC prosecutor, said this month that Libya could try Muammar Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam at home.

The ICC this year issued an arrest warrant for Saif al-Islam for crimes against humanity.

Abdon Georges Bayeto, the European representative for Gbagbo, called the warrant unfair and said there would be some reaction from the former president's supporters.

"We're very surprised that somebody [Ouattara] who won the election and [is] talking of reconciliation can go to that extent," he told Al Jazeera from London.

"It's very sad. Remember Laurent Gbagbo got 48 per cent of the vote. That's not a small number. It's an important number and we're going to react. We think that that's unfair."

The climate in Ivory Coast is already tense, with Gbagbo's FPI party boycotting legislative polls next month in protest at the detention of FPI officials in connection with alleged crimes committed during the conflict.

Earlier last month, the government set up an 11-man peace commission to investigate the country's post-election conflict that killed more than 3,000 people and drove a million others from their homes.

Ouattara said the commission "will have to tackle difficult questions such as the land issue in rural areas and identity questions".

It was not immediately clear whether the warrant would have any implications on the commission headed by Charles Konan Banny, a former prime minister.

Ouattara, whose forces have also been accused of being involved in the post-election violence, took office in May, vowing to restore "unity between all the daughters, and all the sons of our dear Ivory Coast".

Yea Mr/Mrs. Gambia.

You know, it always bit my imagination when I do see Africans talking about mother Africa, none of them will prefer to say our government but rather prefering the word: "THE GOVERNMENT"

I think it is a right time for our leader to double check this horrific situation in our Continent !

Lalo Kebba, we cannot say our government , because is not the government of the peoples. African president do whatever they want and like without consulting its peoples.I cannot say my government because of the death of Deyda that the gambia government refused to investigate.

SO, WHEN SHALL WIL START TO SAY: OUR GOVERNMENT ?

AFRICA IS STILL THE ONLY CONTINENT WHERE HER PEOPLE CANNOT SAY OUR GOVERNMENT.

AFRICANS ARE ONLY USE TO SAY:

Quoting Babson:
And I pray His Excellency President and Commander in Chief Sheik Professor Dr Alhagi Curer of Aids, Athma, Infertility, Diabetes, Preacher Yahya Abdul Aziz Jemus Junkung Ajaratou Asombi Jammeh !

Coment: Well Said Babson, But You forgot to Add the "NAASIRUL DEEN" !
Indeed, those who refused to leave Honourably, will surely leave in other ways, this recall my mind to the time when He Nyerere used to helped the Brundians, the then president of Brundi said: I don't know why Nyerere is trying to interfare in our Internal Issues ?
May He (Nyerere's) Humble soul rest in peace.
But for the case of Gbagbo, he mistakenly try to disallow the "Wazungu children their morning Chocolate produce from the Cacoa, that was why the Wazungu slapped him bitterly for him to open his eyes !
So watch out Mr. ADO
(In Short for Alasana Watara)!

Julius Nyerere of Tanzania has once said that "If you don't leave power honourably you will [certainly] leave it dishonourably". This was evident in the cases of Gbagbo, Jawara, Ghadafi, Amin, Mubarack, Sadam ... the list goes on. And I pray His Excellency President and Commander in Chief Sheik Professor Dr Alhagi Curer of Aids, Athma, Infertility, Diabetes, Preacher Yahya Abdul Aziz Jemus Junkung Ajaratou Asombi Jammeh will also leave power peacefully but dishonourably. I hope I have mentioned all his titles!
