(JollofNews) - The leader of the Gambia National Congress (GMC) has made a surprise return to the Gambia after more than four years in self-exile. Mai Ahmed Fatty, arrived in Banjul on Tuesday night.

He has since joined the campaign trail of the United Democratic Party (UDP) in the Badibous where he attacked the way and manner incumbent President Jammeh is governing the country.

Mai Fatty left the Gambia on a hospital stretcher in 2006 after a terrible road traffic accident in which he broke both legs and neck.

“I was under long medical care, followed by prolong physiotherapy. Most people do not survive what I went through, the long excruciating pain, trying to walk again and regain and build muscle strength, trying to regain cervical rotation, coping with stress and injuries, multiple surgeries, heavy medications, long hospitalisation in single confined medical environment, diet, away from friends, family, loved ones in a foreign country,” he said in a rare interview with AllGambian Online Newspaper.

“I lived in hospitals, but my mind and spirit remain indomitable. I do not wish for anyone to go through something similar.”

While recovering in hospital, Mr Fatty authored a book and established new alliances with progressive forces internationally. He later helped register the GMC with all documentation, detailed manifesto working with people on the ground in the Gambia and obtained additional academic qualification.

Recounting how the accident happened in the same newspaper interview, Mr Fatty said: “A trailer truck left its lane in my opposite approaching driving direction and rammed into me twisting the front of my car 180 degrees towards the direction I was driving away from. It took Fire Services on the scene over two hours to get me out of the car.”

After spending a night at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital, Mr Fatty was evacuated to neighbouring Senegal before moving to an unknown country.

Mai Fatty’s return to the Gambia may add colour to the UDP campaign, but whether he can help Ousainou Darboe win the election on November 24 will only be known when the votes are cast and counted.
