Gambia Among Last 20 In UN 2011 Human Development Index

Yahya Jammeh
(JollofNews) – The Gambia is ranked 168 out of 187 nations in this year’s Human Development Index (HDI), says an annual United Nations report released Wednesday in Norway.

This Puts Gambia in the bottom 20 countries on human development. According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) website:”Gambia’s HDI is 0.420, which gives the country a rank of 168 out of 187 countries with comparable data. The HDI of Sub-Saharan Africa as a region increased from 0.365 in 1980 to 0.463 today, placing Gambia below the regional average.”

Norway, Australia, Netherlands, United States and New Zealand are the top five while Chad, Mozambique, Burundi, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo are the bottom five of the Human Development Report ‘s ranking of national achievement in health, education and income.

The 2011 Report—Sustainability and Equity: A Better Future for All shows that all the 10 bottom ranking countries are sub-Saharan African.
“Despite recent progress, these low-HDI nations still suffer from inadequate incomes, limited schooling opportunities, and life expectancies far below world averages due in great part to deaths from preventable and treatable diseases such as malaria and AIDS”, states a press release from the UNDP.

It added: “In the lowest-ranking country in the 2011 HDI, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, more than three million people died from warfare and conflict-linked illness in recent years, prompting the largest peacekeeping operation in UN history.”
“Some 1.7 billion people in 109 countries lived in ‘multidimensional’ poverty in the decade ending in 2010, by the MPI calculus, or almost a third of the countries’ entire combined population of 5.5 billion. That compares to the
1.3 billion people estimated to live on US$1.25 a day or less, the measure used in the UN Millennium Development Goals, which seeks to eradicate “extreme” poverty by 2015.”

How and who compiled this report? What were the samples used? They can put all African states last if they want. The UNDP like its parent organisation, the UN will never say anything positive about African states as long as these organisations continue to be headed by the west. They know very little about Africa.

Paulo...maybe Mr Jammeh should take a holiday in Britain every year...like King Hussein of Jordan.

He had his own Boat moored on Lake Windermere...and used to frequent our high class restaurants..around Ullswater with his glamourous English wife.

The Lake District could do with a boost to the local economy from high rollers like Mr Jammeh and the First Lady..

The First Lady...would love a day at the Trafford Centre in Manchester...i'm sure

I mean to say...Washington is far too expensive.

Fair doo...s

Theres more to life than growing nuts ?

All those Gambian journalists in Birmingham..would be sure to show Jammeh a good time.

I think The President needs to get out more.

Quoting Mike Scales:
African leadership prefer the West for there summer retreats and lifes "little" luxuries

for the 17 yrs Jammeh has been in power, every single summer retreat is spent on Kanilai Farms... "growing what to eat and eating what was grown".

how about that?

Guys you know the challenge of every nation today is to build a feeling of oneness of dependence on one another because the question is usually not how well each nation works but how well we work together without looking at our size, wealth, military super power or mighty in resources, but all been equal in the eyes of humanity. In military, TUG OF WAR STANDS TO BE THE SYMBOL OF WORKING TOGETHER. WE PULL TOGETHER WE WIN”. There is a lot of discrimination within developing nations and rich nations that policies only serve the interest of the West. Let’s also look at the WTO that is a negotiating body between the developed nations and developing nations in trading but in reality looking at the trading policies whose interest does it serve? We will only be able to overcome challenges confronting the world by working together and respecting each member state.

There is enough wealth and resources to support all human beings and generations of human beings yet unborn.... What we lack is a system that allows the fair distribution of wealth that is created by ALL. Ofcourse, invest ors deserve returns on their investments but so too do the workers who make those investments grow...If an investor can buy and a private jet,a private yatch, own several mansions,a fleet of super cars ,etc.... Isn't it fair to say that the least paid worker in his/her company should be able to afford a 3 bedroom house,a good car,a holiday once a year and not struggle to live a comfortable life ?

A human being only needs so much to survive good... That is why those who have so much sometimes indulge in self destruction or wastage...But the argument always is that it's theirs so they can spend it anyhow...But would they have produced so much wealth on their own? Think about it....

Something is definitely wrong.... And we all know what it is.... But the trouble is .... We are damned, labelled and ostracised if we say it....Or risk being criminalised or imprisoned if we dare take actions to change it....Witness what is happening to Wall Street protesters in New York,London or Sydney.....

The Almighty and All conquering Global Capitalism is not prepared to surrender its victory against Nazism and its twin brothers,Fascis m and Communism, to ordinary folks like you and I...

And the system is so cleverly tailored and practiced that it's very victims, whether they be the middle class or at the very bottom, are ready to die to defend it...

But how can it not be so ....When the system creates avenues, such as the entertainment industry, where talent is recognised, prom oted and handsomely rewarded....allowing a few to rise up the ladder and become affluent....Thus many are called but a few are chosen...

The Global economic market...is failing.

This is good news for the IMF and The World Bank.

The international investment Banks are now much more powerful than any form of government. Neither are they accountable to the people.

The IMF was created by the Americans in 1944. {How opportunist was that?}

They have by far the biggest share holding at 17%....and they are the only country to have a "Super Veto"

In 1944..who could predict the fall of Nazi Germany and Japan?

The World Bank have always had an American Chief Executive.

The IMF and The WB....now have control of most national economies on Earth.

The protests around the world recently in 28 countries...demonstrates the fears of world citizens.

There is something definately wrong.

Under such conditions...there are now more than 1 billion people living on just a dollar a day...or less

Mike you are right that something is not going in the way it should be. Not long ago there was a report (IMF) on The Gambia's economic growth. This HDI is inconsistent with that IMF Gambia country economic report. No development (whether economic or social) is "development" if it has no impact on people's ways of life.

Quote “How can the rich sleep..whilst there poor impoverished workers go hungry?

Something is definately wrong”.

Comment: Very well calculated and structured comment Mike, something is real wrong from North to South or from East to West and we are found wanting to be paying the price.
HAPPY EID TO EVERYONE AND LETS SEE OUR POLITICAL DIFFERENCE AS A WEAKNESS AND OUR ULTIMATE STRENGTH ONENESS AND LOVE FOR GAMBIA. ALL THE BEST TO EVERYONE AND MAY WHAT IS THE INTEREST OF ALL STAND ALWAYS NOT EVIL THOUGHTS.
