GPU Granted Observer Status At ACHPR

AHMED_ALOTA(JollofNews) – The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) has granted the Gambia Press Union (GPU) observer status on Wednesday durings its 50th Ordinary Session, which is being held from October 24 to November 7, 2011 at the Sheraton International Conference Centre, in Brufuti. The position, which is reserved to Non-Governmental Organisations working in the field of human rights, has been spearheaded by the Article 19/European Commission funded project, and will provide to GPU the opportunity to speak before the Commission Sessions and mostAHMED_ALOTA of its Side Events, and propose subjects for debate.
In an exchange with GPU, Burno Menzan, Article 19 Programme Assistant, indicated hat the observer status GPU applied for under the ARTICLE 19/GPU EC funded project has just been granted., and was quick to add: ''This means that one of the core objectives of our common project has been reached''.
Far from succumbing to an auto-satisfaction, he expressed hope that GPU will take full advantage of this status which allows the GPU to make statements at the Commission sessions.
''This is excellent news,'' exclaimed with excitement Aloa Ahmed Alota, GPU Executive Director. ''It is a turning point in the history of the GPU. I can't wait to celebrate - there will be a big party at the Secretariat in late November to coincide with the safety and security training workshop,'' he noted in a satisfactory tone.
Commenting on this wonderful development, Estelle Nkounkou Ngongo, West African Human Rights Defenders Programme Officer, made it clear that the hardest thing now for GPU is how to keep the momentum going by making best use of this opportunity. ''This opens more doors for GPU to address issues affecting the Gambian media,'' she said.

The ACHPR is a joke. They have been sitting on the sideline and collecting their per diems as Gambians continue to suffer under Jammeh. Hopefully we will start seeing them issuing statements condemning the oppression in The Gambia.
