12 Senegalese Fishermen Still Missing
Tuesday, 09 August 2011 22:44
(Saint-Louis) - The families of 12 Senegalese fishermen missing at sea for over three weeks began a period of mourning on Tuesday,
though search efforts were continuing, an official said.Searches by sea and air were continuing, scouring the waters around Senegal and Mauritania for the men from northern Senegalese city of Saint-Louis who have been missing for 23 days.

Matar Sambou, head of Senegal's fisheries surveillance unit said the fishing boat the missing men were in had not been located "but some of their belongings, cool bags [for conserving fish], a GPS system and 11 buckets have been found by Senegalese fishermen".
But with no signs of life, relatives of those missing have now accepted the strong possibility that the men are dead.
Boat owner Assane Gueye, who has family members among the missing, said: "We accept the will of God who has taken our sons from us".
Fishing has been a prosperous industry in Senegal in the past but in recent years fish have become more scarce and local fishermen have had to go further from the coast to fill their nets.
